History of AISP

From the first measurements in 2020 to AITracker, Countbox and projects covering over 300,000. hours of recordings.

From recording to traffic data

Subsequent versions of AITracker, new types of measurements and the development of Countbox arose from one question: how to reliably automate the work that was previously performed by observers?

  1. From recording to traffic data

2020 — the Polish General Traffic Survey (GPR).

    Why hasn't anyone automated this?

    Read on

In 2020, I met Polish General Traffic Survey (GPR) for the first time and asked one fundamental question.

😲 "Why hasn't anyone automated this yet?"

Historically, traffic measurements were carried out by observers (initially road workers and bridge supervisors). more). There were many attempts to automate traffic measurements (rubber hoses, photocells, etc.), but they were characterized by errors (e.g. light vehicles were lost).

For many years, Polish General Traffic Survey (GPR) was based on observers - people who, with a paper sheet in hand, stood by the road for many hours and marked each categorized vehicle!

In GPR2020, one method dominated, based on the use of a camera and human work. And this method is...

  2. Video recording. Queen of 2020

    Read on

Road traffic was recorded 24 hours a day by a camera on an SD card. After removing the stand, the video was downloaded and distributed to observers. This method had advantages, for example

    • Verifiability. The client could receive video recordings and verify them with the results.

    • Observers did not have to go into the field and be exposed to weather conditions.

    • When working at home with a film, they could rewind it and count more precisely.

It was better, but it wasn't perfect. This work model was still associated with

    • Maintaining a large team of observers (especially during UPR).

    • Human errors (e.g. confusing relationships), as fatigue and hours of watching the film affected the quality!

    • Poor category recognition! People often confused difficult categories (e.g. delivery buses with windows).

    • No punctuality! Observers often submitted results at the last minute.

  3. We teach AI vehicle categories

The first step is to teach Artificial Intelligence to recognize vehicle categories from GPR measurement. Several months of work allowed us to obtain satisfactory results! We started with 8 GPR classes, then expanded to 5 more for SCPR measurements. Currently, AI recognizes 22 classes consistent with the extended GPR classification.

    Sectional measurements of vehicle speeds

Two parallel measuring lines and distances are sufficient as a measuring section for AITracker.

For the first time in history, we count intersections and small roundabouts with an accuracy of 85%. We conduct tests and suggest clients to mount a 4-5m high camera to improve the quality of the results.

AITracker-Gui version 1.6 is available for customers. The extensive interface and possibilities allow you to:

    • Built-in traffic charts by relationship, category and section.

    • Reporting and reclassification of results.

    • Errata, i.e. the ability to manually correct the results.

    Customer program

Version 1.6 of AITracker was a total novelty on the market! Traffic measurements have never been so transparent.
